Qualcomm Unveils Wireless AR Smart Viewer Design

Qualcomm Technologies, a leading manufacturer of 5G and mobile device components, has reached a major milestone for its Wireless Augmented Reality (AR) Smart Viewer Reference Design, it announced on Friday.

The San Diego-based tech giant’s Snapdragon XR2 Platform powers the new Smart Viewer, which provides tetherless original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and original device manufacturer (ODM) support to prototypes across the market, facilitating the development of future solutions for the Metaverse.

According to the firm, Qualcomm’s new platform will allow designers to create significantly smaller AR smart glass form factors with Goertek’s technologies, leading to a 40 percent thinner form factor.

SeeYa, a Hefei, China-based display maker, will provide the solution with dual micro-OLED binocular displays, which provide specs such as a 1920 x 1080 per eye resolution, 90Hz refresh rates, and no motion blur capabilities, Qualcomm explained.

The platform’s AR smart viewer RGB and dual monochromatic cameras will also allow six degrees of freedom (6DoF), along with head and hand tracking as well as gesture inputs.

Qualcomm’s latest solution also provides a “wireless split processing architecture” to redistribute computing across AR smart glass devices and smartphones to reduce latency below 3 milliseconds.

The company’s FastConnect 6900 system provides WiFi 6/ 6E and Bluetooth to reach some of the fastest connectivity speeds and ranges in the industry, Qualcomm explained.

App developers and system integrators using the platform can receive the following:

  • Enhanced controls and XR traffic channel controls to boost motion-to-render-to-photon (M2R2P) latency reduction
  • New power modes to accommodate low-power performance without latency reduction

The news comes days after T-Mobile, a major 5G partner for Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Spaces platform, opened its XR Accelerator programme on Tuesday for startups, firms, and developers to build novel XR devices for the industry.

The Accelerator will develop future 5G and AR technologies to expand the global ecosystem of XR solutions across sectors such as education, entertainment, health and wellness, medical, and others.
