Qualcomm views the Metaverse as a massive development for the future of industrial use cases, rather than social media, the company’s Chief Executive told CNBC in an interview on Thursday.
Cristiano Amon, Qualcomm’s CEO, said in a statement to CNBC’s “Mad Money” programme the Metaverse would create “a number of different opportunities,” adding,
“You’re always going to have the big social network, consumer play. You’re going to have a big one for gaming, but industrial is big”
Amon also noted his firm’s partnership with Microsoft, which uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 850 chipset in the its HoloLens mixed reality (MR) headset lineup.
He added the potential of the Metaverse surpassed social and leisure uses due to the drive for cloud computing in the enterprise market space.
He explained further, stating that the current cloud economy has provided “digital twins of everything,” adding,
“When the car shows up at the dealership and somebody is going to look under the hood, they can put a virtual reality, augmented reality device, and it will tell you from the digital twin in the cloud, where to fix it, where’s the problem”
Qualcomm Milestones in the XR Industry
The comment comes after Qualcomm posted massive earnings for its first quarter (Q1) earnings report, just after revealing it had partnered with Microsoft to develop the custom XR Snapdragon processor for Metaverse solutions at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2022 in early January.
The upcoming devices would allow Snapdragon-powered virtual, augmented, and mixed reality (VR/AR/MR) devices to run on Microsoft’s software ecosystem, Amon said at the time.
Qualcomm has also struck several strategic partnerships in the industry over the past few years to incorporate its Snapdragon XR2 chipset, namely for the Meta Quest 2 and Lenovo’s A3 smart glasses.
The massive US electronics component firm also joined the XR Association, a Washington, DC-based organisation representing the development of XR solutions and major tech giants such as Google, HTC VIVE, Microsoft, Accenture, Unity, and many others in the global industry.
