XLA Unveils Metasites Framework at GDC 2023

XLA announced on Tuesday that it had launched its Metasites modular 3D internet framework, with subsequent demos taking place at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2023.

Alexey Savchenko, XLA Chief Product Officer, demoed the solution at the event in San Francisco as the firm addressed audiences in a speech on the Metaverse and synthetic media.

The platform incorporates metaverse, cloud, and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to power community-driven video game and entertainment creations.

XLA Metasites recently received around $100 million USD in initial funding to develop virtual worlds with interactive, engaging content, according to a press release.

Comments on Metasites Solution

In XLA’s presentation, it will debut Metasites’ core experience, high-definition graphics, and cloud and browser access, and integration of OpenAI GPT-3.5. The latter tool provides intelligent interactions with non-playable characters while joining spaces, virtual assistants, and others.

In his speech, Savchenko told audiences that the idea behind Metasites allowed each location to become a part of an “infinite network of 3D, explorable spaces.”

He continued,

“Like hyperlinks, portals connect these worlds, and the core infrastructure operates on a series of open protocols and standards – much like today’s web. We strongly believe that the future of the internet is in 3D and are looking to partner up with creators and brands from all spheres and industries to build it together.”

Savchenko added that his company aimed to create “an evolution of the internet and new form of storytelling” with developers and authors “shaping worlds that create their agency, presence, and stories, accessible across multiple platforms.”

The XLA exec concluded: “It’s not about bringing games to new audiences. It’s about making it easier to communicate, educate, commerce, play, and create while being justly rewarded for your actions.”

What’s On Offer?

Metasites access for individual content creators and enterprise users will adopt a revenue-sharing model, where users have full control and can manage their content.

Users can also analyse text semantically, create 3D scenes, and deploy content or connect to XLA’s ecosystem using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5.

The platform will allow users to access virtual assets and tools such as a software developer kit (SDK), experiences editor, payment processor, inventory and item management system, and marketing tools, among others.

It will also offer developers an interoperable platform for transferring digital assets to manage inventory objects across environments.

At the GDC, XLA will offer a closed beta version of the platform in the summer and open an enterprise and creator programme in the third quarter (Q3). A full commercial release is set to roll out in Q4 this year.

XR Innovation Takes Centre Stage at GDC 2023

The news comes amid a host of fresh innovations at the conference, with several key companies unveiling their latest creations and upgrades for developers.

Spatial, one of the world’s top metaverse platforms for socialising and collaboration, announced on Monday it had integrated its Unity Creator Toolkit beta for early access to developers.

Major firms such as Vogue, Mcdonalds’, and others have tapped the platform for immersive events, training sessions, and gatherings.

Its latest upgrade incorporates Unity’s industry-leading tools to promote gamification and interactive exhibits. It does so with flexible content creation and publishing for games and interactive content across VR devices, browsers, and mobile devices.

The latest additions to the platform include customised avatars, world-linking portals, enhanced interoperability, and visual scripting. This allows people to create Unity-backed worlds in a series of clicks, according to Spatial.

Toolkit enhancements will also provide updated visualisations with improved lighting, animations, shaders, textures, and triggers.

Los Angeles-based metaverse firm Croquet Corporation also demoed its creation at the GDC. Its Croquet for Unity solution incorporates a JavaScript multiplayer framework for seamless connectivity with Unity’s developer toolkit.

It will also provide Unity-based immersive experiences with a low and no-code platform. It also removes the need to deploy servers to dramatically enhance multiplayer network configuration, leveraging the platform’s Reflector global network system.

XLA’s novel solution provides coordinated and seamless interactions across metaverse spaces with a unified computational architecture to streamline synchronised content and complex computations.

The solution aims to improve metaverse interactions with bit-identical operations across clients, servers, and devices. The technologies empower Unity developers with synchronised points of views, cloud computing on multi-access edge computing (MEC) 5G networks, and others. This provides unrivalled low latency, low bandwidth, and low costs for metaverse experiences.
