If the metaverse ever takes off, it will be due to products like the Pimax Portal. Claimed to be the world’s first metaverse entertainment system, it consists of a Nintendo Switch-like tablet with detachable controllers and several optional accessories, such as a VR headset.
The $299 USD base model is expected to come equipped with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. An optional headset boasts a 4K QLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate, powered by a Qualcomm XR2 processor. When you switch to VR mode, simply detach the controllers and notch them into the sides of the headset. Best of all, everything runs on Android, so you won’t have to worry about any proprietary software. Other features include multiple cameras, sensors for eye / face / mouth tracking, WiFi 6E, Bluetooth 5.1 connectivity, microSD expansion, and a USB Type-C port. Going on vacation? Simply bring the Pimax Mini Station along and you’ll be able to dock the Portal for use as a gaming PC, complete with an AMD Ryzen 7 6800U processor, Radeon 680M graphics, 32GB of RAM, 1TB of internal storage, as well as a 56 Wh battery. It’s expected to hit Kickstarter soon, possibly in multiple colors.
