Mark Zuckerberg won’t tell you how user repairable the Meta Quest 3 is, but iFixit has no issues with tearing down one of these mixed reality headsets to show us. What you’ll notice right away is just how difficult it will be to replace its lithium polymer battery pack.
To put things int perspective, the Meta Quest 3’s battery is just as difficult as to replace as in the Quest 2, and much more so than the Quest Pro. On the bright side, the two controllers have easily replaceable batteries, which are used to power the array of infrared LEDs that the headset uses to track their movements in 3D space.
By drawing attention to these design flaws, our hope is that the engineers and product designers will factor it into their next iteration so that when that ‘iPhone moment’ does arrive, we’ll already have repairability and reusability at the forefront of the discussion,” said Shahram Mokhtari, iFixit Teardown Tech.
