Meta Platforms has begun raising prices $100 on its Meta Quest 2 headsets, media reported on Tuesday, citing an announcement from the Oculus blog.
According to the Menlo Park-based tech giant, the price increase would allow it to “invest for the long term and keep driving the VR industry forward” with its games, research, and hardware innovations.
It wrote in the post,
“Starting in August, Meta Quest 2 will cost $399.99 USD and $499.99 USD for the 128GB and 256GB versions respectively. And for a limited time, every new headset purchase will include an offer to download the popular VR rhythm game Beat Saber at no additional cost. Alongside these changes, we’ll also increase the prices for Meta Quest 2 accessories and refurbished units”
The blog post added customers purchasing Meta Quest 2 headsets from 1 August to 31 December would receive Beat Saber for free 14 days after activating their new devices before 31 January next year.
The news comes as Meta faces significant revenue losses in the first quarter (Q1) this year, with media reports noting Meta lost roughly $3 billion in Q1 due to massive investment from its Reality Labs division, nosediving stock prices across 2022.
The company will also report second quarter (Q2) earnings on Wednesday.
The metaverse firm has considered buying VR eye-tracking startup AdHawk Microsystems to boost in-house products such as its upcoming Project Cambria, Bloomberg reported this week, despite rolling back investment in its Reality Labs products such as its Project Nazare smart glasses.
Meta also installed WhatsApp support for its Ray-Ban Stories smart glasses, which will provide hands-free calling, messaging, and voice controls for users, the firm announced last week.
