Croquet Corporation has released its Microverse integrated developer environment (IDE), the company announced on Tuesday.
The firm’s Croquet operating system (Croquet OS) powers the IDE, providing Web3 developers access to interoperable Metaverse worlds, low-latency and high-performing virtual spaces, and a platform with standards-based operations.
The Los Angeles-based firm also unveiled additional multiplane portal technologies, which securely connect separate, independent 3D virtual spaces from developers.
The portals also provide decentralised and interoperable worlds in a secure environment, resolving one of the core concerns with travelling between metaverse worlds without proprietary platforms.

Croquet also plans to release an application programme interface (API) and framework to power portals between web-based Metaverse spaces, created on and outside of the Microverse IDE via its multiplane portal framework, which is under development amid collaboration with its developer community.
Developers wishing to join the beta programme can do so at the Los Angeles-based firm’s website.
The news comes after Croquet earned a prestigious ‘Startup to Watch’ Auggie Award at the Augmented World Expo (AWE) 2022, which represents some of the world’s top virtual and augmented reality (AR/VR) firms.
David A Smith, Founder and Chief Technology Officer for Croquet, said his team had “learned a lot” from developers creating the first projects on the Microverse IDE while in Alpha.
He continued, stating,
“As usual, they have given us great feedback, demanded new features we are rapidly working on and built things we never would have thought of. Use cases range from a virtual digital twin control room for a power plant to theme parks, media, fashion and the emergence of the Metaverse as the 3D web extending consumer and business websites”

The news comes as the company open-sourced its IDE and other components of the platform via Apache Licence v2.0 to facilitate developers as they used the platform for world-building.
The enterprise added it was committed to developing and deploying a “true open Metaverse, free of control and restrictions,” adding it backed open-source standards to drive interoperability at scale, allowing global developers to “collaborate to create a powerful, scalable, free and open foundation.”

Dr Vanessa Freudenberg, Chief Architect for Croquet, added that open-sourcing the Microverse IDE offered developers “the utmost flexibility in realizing their own dreams for the Metaverse.”
She concluded,
“In their Microverse they have complete control of the world mechanics, without having to implement, deploy, or maintain their own interaction servers to make it multiuser. We believe that an open source model will be a powerful force to build a free and open ecosystem for the Metaverse”
The news comes after Croquet announced the alpha release of its Croquet OS in mid-May, which provides interoperable functionality across devices, including web browsers, XR headsets, PCs, tablets, and smartphones.
Built on the technologies of its Reflector Network, Croquet aims to build the Metaverse as an open-source project with fully-functional URLs and QR codes to access synchronised, low-latency worlds complete with low-bandwidth and live data.
